A Foucauldian Reading of Utopias/Dystopias in Selected Novels by Margaret Atwood

The purpose of this study is to examine the validity utopian systems by investigating Margaret Atwood’s Handmaid’s Tale (1986), Testaments (2019) and Heart Goes Last (2015). Set in different ages, selected novels discuss changes that happen lives characters who live societies eventually turn into dystopias. theoretical framework applied Michel Foucault’s theory power specifically concepts surveillance, discourse, governmentality. ‘Surveillance’ continuous observation assessment citizens. ‘Discourse’ language shapes a society’s relationships constitute knowledge meaning. Lastly, ‘governmentality’ implementing certain rules regulations order manipulate minds These three allow people authority control proves futility applying real world as they always fail dystopias instead.
